What is vegan?

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, ‘all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose’.

There are many ways to embrace vegan living and a vegan lifestyle, but one thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish and insects), dairy, eggs and honey.

Vegans also avoid animal-derived materials, products tested on animals and places that use animals for entertainment.

Three reasons to choose vegan

There are many reasons to choose vegan, and here’s three to help get you started!

1. It’s better for the environment

Veganuary says that going vegan and opting for planet-friendly foods and sustainable plant-based proteins is a great way to help the environment.

The charity says that according to Oxford University research, going vegan is the easiest and most effective way each of us can help protect our planet.

It says that animal agriculture is ‘a leading driver of deforestation, which in turn is a key cause of biodiversity loss’.

Additionally, animal agriculture is also ‘one of the biggest polluters, contributing to ocean dead zones and algal blooms’, and ‘creates more climate-changing emissions than the fuel from our entire global transport system’.

The charity says that animal products ‘can be more damaging than every train, plane, car, bus and ship on earth’.

2. It could improve your health

Veganuary says that research shows vegans suffer less from heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

The charity said: “Many of our participants report other benefits too, from clearer skin to better sleep to having more energy!

A range of statistics about veganism and health can be found on The Vegan Society website.

3. It’s delicious!

The planet-based revolution means there are more vegan options available than ever before, so you don’t need to miss out on your favourite foods when going vegan – just opt for the plant-based alternatives!
